Hyderabad: Starting from the next academic year, all the universities in Telangana State will have common core syllabus for undergraduate courses. The Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) which had constituted university-wise subject committee to revise the undergraduate syllabus for history, commerce, anthropology, sociology, social work and public administration has almost completed the process.

Subject committee on history comprising dean, head of department, board of studies of Osmania University (OU) and faculty from degree colleges felt that there was need to have a separate paper on Telangana history at the degree level and recommended the same to TSCHE. Besides, the committee has also rooted out major portion of Andhra Pradesh content.

“In the undivided AP State, students used to study AP content like culture, history, poems separately. Now, in the wake of formation of new State of Telangana, students will study AP content as part Indian history not as a separate portion ,” a senior official of TSCHE explained.

According to the University Grants Commission, syllabus of a subject has to be revised for every four years. However, same syllabus is being followed for History and Commerce which were revised in 2007 and 2008 respectively. “From several years, the curriculum was not changed. There is need for revision in the wake of formation of new State. Hence, we have taken up revision process,” an official said.   The revision of the syllabus is aimed to provide good foundation for government job aspirants. For subjects like public administration and commerce, curricula are being designed as per changes and needs in the society.
