MBBS student found hanging in her hostel room at AIIMS

A 17-year-old, first-year MBBS student at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was found hanging in her hostel room on the campus on Sunday, police said. Khushboo Chaudhary, who belonged to Bikaner in Rajasthan, had joined the institute only six weeks ago. AIIMS authorities said preliminary inquiry had ruled out ragging. No suicide note was found. The police took her cellphone for investigations. Sources said Chaudhary was among the toppers in the AIIMS entrance exam and had joined the institute on July 10. “She was very cheerful and friendly. All of us came here in July and we were already friends. Last night, she asked us to leave… she seemed upset, but nobody thought she would take the extreme step,” said a student, who stays in the hostel.

“She was one of the toppers and was very active in classrooms,” said another student. The sources said the suicide was discovered by one of her friends, who had left her cellphone for charging in Chaudhary’s room. At around 2.45 am, when she went to Chaudhary’s room to fetch her phone, she found the room locked. When she got no response, she raised an alarm. “The door was broken open by security staff. A PCR call was made at around 3.20 am,” a source said. AIIMS spokesperson Dr Amit Gupta said, “This has come as a huge shock to us. Preliminary inquiry has ruled out ragging or any adjustment difficulties. She had been a student at AIIMS for six weeks only. We have ordered a thorough inquiry by a six-member committee.” Dr Gupta said after Chaudhary’s friends reported the incident at around 2.50 am, security guards, hostel staff and the superintendent rushed to her room and called the police. The body was taken to AIIMS emergency, he said. “Her friends described her as a cheerful girl. She spent Saturday evening shopping with her friends. One friend said she seemed normal in the evening,” Dr Gupta said. Chaudhary’s parents arrived in the capital after being informed about her death. DCP (South) Prem Nath said the police were probing the case under Section 171 of the CrPC.
